Health, Safety and Environment continue as a challenge because it causes many problems
such as
pollution to the environment, injuries, disabilities, diseases and even death to living
organisms/people. Although many efforts continue being implemented by governments, key
personals and non-governmental organizations to make sure the environment and people are
safe
at their workplace, the issue of environment, Health and Safety still is a challenge, it
observed that,
there are 3 billion workers in the world where nearly 2 billion of them work in
unhealthy and
unsafe working conditions this is according to WHO and ILO’s current report.
Approximately,
2.78 million workers die each year from occupational accident and work-related illness
of which
2.4 million comes from disease related problems also 374 million workers are suffering
from nonfatal occupation illness
(Rg, april 2019).
Despite the improved economic outlook for Africa, many challenges compromise real
growth.
Poor economies have poor working conditions and environment, which also indicate a poor
occupational safety and health services. Occupational health and safety information is
very
important to build a huge understand on OSH related issues from both formal and informal
sector
at different levels starting from individual to national level as well as the whole
world at large
(Muchiri, 2009)
Occupational health and safety is directly related with economic activities undertaken
in the
country. As the economic activities grow and expand, occupational injuries and diseases
are more
likely to increase among workers in different sectors of economy such as agriculture,
mining,
transport, and manufacture. This may result in high occupational health and safety
services
demand, which might be difficult to meet by developing countries that are prioritizing
economic
expansion without regard to their impact on occupational health and safety. Tanzania,
like other
developing countries, faces challenges in promotion and provision of occupational health
and
safety services especially in informal sectors (Mrema, 2015).
Informal sector is the mechanism of employment and income generation in developing
countries
where by individual or group of people employ themselves in different sector so that
they can
sustain their needs.
Previously, the informal sectors were not recognized and acknowledged by the government but
as
they grew up and showed great contribution in economic growth in different aspects; the
government recognized them. Hence, development of different policies and programs began.
According to the previous studies on occupational health and safety, there is an increase of
informal sectors which results on a rapid increase in social economic status among people in
the
society. The increase in economic activities in informal sectors has led to the increase in
occupational health and safety hazards. There is very small percentage of people who are
able to
access occupational health and safety services especially in informal sectors.
Although there is an increase in occupational health and safety hazards, there is no
sufficient
training/education, laws, regulation, legislation, policies and programs that enforce
changes to people towards health and safety hazards. Also the existing laws, regulation and
legislation needs
some modifications so that to complement with international requirement and standards
(Mrema,
2015).
